The Sports Guy slips on the NBA Live 08 mo-cap suit
Who says mo-cap is the technical capturing of data to create realistic, fluid motion in gaming that's devoid of soul? Sports writer Bill "The Sports Guy" Simmons did a piece for ESPN's new show, E:60, wherein he heads to EA Sports studios to undergo the motion capture process for NBA Live 08. He even schools Boston Celtics all-star Paul "The Truth" Pierce in the process -- sorta.
While you might have seen mo-cap videos before, Simmons speaks candidly about the technology, observing that sweat makes the suit moist. TMI there, Bill. T-M-I.

Bill Simmons is the man. Excellent articles. Especially if you pay attention to New England sports.

However, if you're not a fan of Boston/New England teams, read his columns with a block of salt.

His wife's better.

EA should do this more (I think I saw a mo-cap documentary before for FIFA, but it was Ronaldinho and such), but seeing the little guy humanizes it. Often it just seems like 'and out popped a game.'

you'd think after 10+ years of so many movies/games doing motion capture, we'd have some modeling programs complete by now and people wouldn't have to keep doing this

Seriously, I thought the headline meant "slips on" as in "slips on a banana peel and falls on his face". Can you tell I'm not thrilled by mocap?

me too,
i only watched that video to see him fall.
oh well.
and yes, think black fabric covering your whole body while you play sports gets sweaty, thanks for stating the obvious.

Well I don't feel so much like an idiot anymore. I really thought it had something to do with falling and even after the video I still thought, "Huh... he more like rolled over than fell". Then I read the comments, then I read the title again..
Boy this has been a long day.

omg i was waiting for him to bust his ass the entire video lol. Joystiq should be careful with their suggestive headlines lol.

Bill Simmons is the biggest homer in sports media, I can't stand his one sided (and often incorrect) articals.
He single handedly makes ESPN.com suck.
Knoxximus @ Oct 18th 2007 2:41AM
He DID freeze Pierce...if ONLY for a second. LOL!
