Mario Kart: Source PC mod uses 'the best parts of each' MK game
You don't have to tell the crew of people painstakingly piecing together Mario Kart: Source that there's a much easier way to play Mario Kart games on PCs. Sure, they could fire up an emulator and play Mario Kart 64 and it would be just like it was way back when ... but where's the challenge in that? What they could (and did) opt to do was take Half-Life 2's flexible Source Engine to create a Mario Kart mashup; the project manager says, "We're not simply recreating one version of MK, but using the best parts of each." It's a Franken-kart, if you will.
Eager to get a closer look at it? Peep the gallery we quickly threw together, or dig around the project's official site. Want to actually play the thing? Says the project manager: "As far as a public beta is concerned, we will not release anything until we are satisfied ..." Either that, or until Nintendo's army of well-paid lawyers shuts the entire project down.

Pole's Big Adventure: Sega's countdown to reveal 8-bit WiiWare title
Sega's mysterious countdown still has about two days to go, but Japanese mag Famitsu has already spilled the beans on what the publisher is planning to reveal. Pole's Big Adventure is a satire of the 8-bit platforming era, developed by Phantasy Star Universe producer Takao Miyoshi. According to IGN, there willl be over 100 hidden gags in the game. For example, eat enough mushroom powerups and your character will grow beyond the size of the screen.
No word on a stateside release yet, but it's set to debut in Japan on February 3rd for 500 Wii points. Oh, and feel free to visit the countdown if you're bored. The mushroom now makes noises. Awesome!

GOG in the Machine: Broken Sword 3 and Robinson's Requiem
In great news for blade glue manufacturers everywhere, Good Old Games is following up last week's release of Broken Sword 2 with Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon. It's still solidly in the adventure genre, but BS 3 takes its predecessor's 2D presentation and adds a whole other "D" to it. You can pick it up for $5.99.
We're not terribly familiar with the other game being added to the service today, Robinson's Requiem, but you don't have to watch much of the video we've embedded after the break to know that $5.99 is an absolute steal.

Explore the wonderful world of old game patents
Technologizer has put together a really beautiful gallery of old electronic gaming patents, the oldest example of which you can see just above. You won't want to miss the early designs of R.O.B., wireless Atari controllers and paleolithic game cabinets.
No, not all of the images in the gallery are directly related to video games. But seriously, if you can't get on board with seeing a prototype drawing of the Speak & Spell, we're not sure there's much we can do for you.

Wiikly Wares: Kirby Dream Land 3, Sandy Beach
WiiWare
Sandy Beach (Konami, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): First, the good news: Yes, you can build sand castles in this game, either at your leisure or facing off against swarms of crabs in the Defend Your Castle-esque Crab Battle mode. The bad news? Well, it wasn't the first Crab Battle that came to mind ...
Virtual Console
Kirby's Dream Land 3 (Super NES™, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): This title had the unfortunate luck of coming out within a week of the incredibly awesome Kirby Superstar -- great timing, Nintendo! Still, it's a fun game that happens to be just like its predecessors. We half expect the company to pull some poetic injustice and release Superstar on Virtual Console next week.

Modder finally illuminates the Game Boy Pocket
We owe a huge debt of gratitude to modder Michael "Bibin" Moffitt -- for years now, our eyes have undergone irreversible damage due to being frequently strained in order to play our Game Boy Pockets in ill-lighted environments. Using only an LED, some perspex and a diffusive layer, Bibin managed to add a backlight to his beloved Pocket, leading to illuminated rounds of Dr. Mario with little effect on the system's battery life. Good going, Bibin!
(Okay, seriously, nobody tell this guy about the Game Boy Light or GBA SP. It sounds like he worked really hard on this, and we don't want to ... ) Oh, hey, Bibin! You're still here! Sure, we'd love to play some Mario's Picross! What's that? Your mom made Rice Krispie Treats? Awesome.

Japanese Namco Museum demo unlocks Home 'gifts'

Here's something nifty. Playing the Japanese demo of Namco Museum on PS3 unlocks special items in PlayStation Home. We've confirmed that this works with the US version of Home after downloading the Namco Museum Beta from the Japanese PS store.
In order to get the schwag, you first need to create a Japanese PSN account. After that, you can download the demo, which contains playable Pac-Man, Galaga, Dig Dug, and Xevious. Achieving high scores in the games will "gift" you with several in-Home items; we've snagged a Galaga T-Shirt so far, but have received tips that a full Galaga arcade machine can be obtained and placed in your virtual apartment.
[Thanks, Andrew]

The Best Thing You'll Hear Today: 8-Bit Jesus
It may not be able to transform water into health potions, but 8-Bit Jesus does deliver on the best (only?) yuletide chip-set tunes blending holiday favorites with classic game themes to ever caress our eardrums. We're partial to "Super Jingle Bros." ourselves, but there's not a throwaway track among them.Doctor Octoroc, the artist behind the collection, is giving away nine-tracks from the album for free. Give them a listen and see if they don't make your holiday just a bit brighter, or at least a bit nerdier.

This Wednesday: Bird, bear, backpack join forces on XBLA
This Wednesday's Xbox Live Arcade update will finally deliver the spruced-up N64 classic, Banjo-Kazooie. After experiencing a brief delay, fans of the backpack-packing bear from Rare will be able dive headfirst into nostalgia, once again transforming into compulsive note-collecting maniacs. It happens to the best of us.
Aside from notes, tokens and jiggies, this version also requires one other collectible: Microsoft Points. You'll need 1,200 of them to proceed beyond the trial version.

More PlayStation oldies coming to PSN 'shortly'
Despite being overwhelmed with current releases and all their graphical bumpy maps, we do occasionally yearn for something a little more earnest and antiquated. This isn't a problem if you have access to the Japanese PSN, but browsers of the American PlayStation Store are unlikely to describe the pre-PS2 pickings as anything but "slim." With that in mind, MTV Multiplayer asked Sony's head of hardware marketing, John Koller, if more downloadable classics were on the way. "Yes, we are working on further PSone additions to the PS Store and should see those launch shortly," came the answer. Though we're left to wonder just how "shortly" that is, we've already assembled a list of our favorite PlayStation games. Won't you vote in our poll and tell us which one you'd like to see on PSN next?
Game & Watch Collection could be US-bound
The best thing about Japan's Club Nintendo? The occasional very cool branded merchandise, but, mostly, the exclusive games. Now there's a glimmer of hope that one of the most popular of these may be offered as a loyalty prize by the new North American chapter of the Club. We're talking about the Game & Watch Collection, which has only been available in Japan ... or for those willing to pay for it on eBay and various online retailers to the tune of $40 and up. But now the game has been rated by the ESRB (it got an "E" rating, not surprisingly) leading to the inevitable conclusion / wishful thinking that it will be available in the States for some amount of Club Nintendo points.
The collection brings together re-creations of three classic Nintendo Game & Watch LCD games: Donkey Kong, Oil Panic, and Green House. Watch them in action after the break.
General Banjo-Kazooie XBLA release delayed until Dec. 3
Microsoft is currently "investigating" the holdup, urging customers who did not receive a redeem code to contact their retailers' customer service departments. That's always a grizzly task. GEDDIT? BECAUSE GRIZZLY IS A TYPE OF BEAR AND BANJO IS A BEAR.

A Vampyre Story sinks teeth into GamersGate
It's been so long since we last heard from A Vampyre Story that we half expected that the undead adventure game from former LucasArts vet Bill Tiller had been sent to the morgue. So imagine as the color returned to our cheeks with news that the Autumn Moon-developed PC adventure was released from its coffin and is now available to stretch its wings as a digital download. While currently it appears that A Vampyre Story is only available from GamersGate, a post on the game's official blog notes that it should begin popping up "on any decent download retail service," including GameTap and metaboli.
First announced more than four years ago, A Vampyre Story is set in Europe during the late 1800s. The game casts players in the gown of a young French opera singer who must escape the hand-drawn clutches of her vampire captive in order to rekindle her former life (and, we hope, the genre's relevancy as well).

PSA: Persona 2 reprint exclusively on Amazon
While the prospect of ever seeing an official, localized release of Persona 2: Innocent Sin remains bleak, those who missed the second chapter, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, when it was first released on PlayStation (yes, PS1) eight years ago, now have a second, albeit seriously limited chance to score a copy of the reprint. Bet you never thought you'd be buying a brand new (and full-priced!) PS1 game again, did you?
To commemorate the December 9th release of Persona 4, Atlus has announced an "ultra limited" reprint of Persona 2, including a bonus disc featuring the trailer and a video interview with the developers, to be sold exclusively through Amazon.com and Amazon.ca.
When, you ask?Right now! Sold out!

A look inside Gears of War 2's arcade
Players who have wandered around spilling blood on the Day One mutliplayer map in Gears of War 2 might have noticed the retro "Playland" arcade in one of the corners, but have any of them checked out the amount of detail that's in there? It's pretty impressive. There are a lot of throwback games referencing 1980s - 1990s coin-op fare, a Thrashball machine and even "Swee Ball," which looks like Sera's version of Skee Ball.
